THIS IS NOT YOUR SUNDAY COFFEE RIDE

Five days. Around 600 kilometres. A gravel bike. A tent. And a bunch of people who thought this sounded like a reasonable idea.

The Big Yellow Pipeline Challenge takes riders from Kalgoorlie to the Perth Hills, following the historic Golden Pipeline through red dirt, bush and wide-open Western Australian country. Most of the trail is unsealed and varied: rutted tracks, sandy sections, rocky outcrops and long fast stretches that test your endurance.

It’s tough. It’s dusty. It’s a ride you’ll talk about for years. And you don’t need to be a professional cyclist to take it on. It’s a ride, not a race, and you won’t be out there on your own.

The pipeline was once a lifeline for the Goldfields. Now every kilometre carries support to young families who need The Nest.

FOLLOW THE PIPELINE

For five days, the pipeline is your guide. It’s been carrying water from the Perth Hills to the Goldfields for over a century, and this time you’re on a mission following it back the other way.

DAY 01

KALGOORLIE ->
COOLGARDIE

A gentle start. After a light lunch and rider briefing you head out of town and meet the pipeline for the first time. Camp at Coolgardie Golf Course.

45 KM

DAY 02

COOLGARDIE ->
SOUTHERN CROSS

The big one. An early start, a long gentle incline and classic outback scenery. Keep an eye out for emus.

184 KM

DAY 03

SOUTHERN CROSS ->
MERREDIN

Hump day. Shorter, but don't be fooled. Sandy tracks, wind and a lot of directional changes. The Wheatbelt scenery makes up for it.

116 KM

DAY 04

MERREDIN ->
GRASS VALLEY

Varied terrain through private farmland with challenging climbs and rocky descents. The final camp. Get ready to settle those fines.

172 KM

DAY 05

GRASS VALLEY -> PARKERVILLE

The Perth Hills finish, with a bang. A punishing but rewarding climb to the finish line, departing from the famous Baker's Hill Pie Shop.

Total 600km over five days. Route subject to change each year.

AN EXPERIENCE YOU WILL TALK ABOUT FOR YEARS

YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE A PRO

You need a bike. You need commitment. And you'll probably need to become very good friends with your training plan.

The Challenge is not a race. The fitter you are the more you'll enjoy it, and training on consecutive days is the best preparation, because backing up day after day is the real test. If you have any health concerns, speak with your GP before registering.

Most riders take it on as part of a team of up to five in relay style, with one rider on the track at all times. Soloists are welcome. E-bikes are welcome too, with maximum speeds of 25km/h on roads and 40km/h at all other times.

TEAMS OF 2-5

Relay style with one rider on the trail at all times. Want a bigger team? Split into two if more than five want to ride.

RIDING SOLO

Every kilometre on your own legs. A special handful do it every year.

GRAVEL OR MTB

Pro tip: Ensure you're kitted up for the challenge with a bike care swag or else you'll wish there was a bike mechanic on the road with you.

WHY WE RIDE

Funds raised go to The Nest, a Youth Futures program that walks alongside young parents and their babies as they build a stable future for their families. Real, practical support. A consistent team that shows up, follows through, and stays for as long as it takes.

163

young families needed support from The Nest last year that Youth Futures didn't have the capacity to provide.

There were 163 times THEY wanted to say yes

But did nOt have the capacity.

Pipeline riders are helping change that. Two rides, two years, over $1.5 million raised for The Nest. Youth Futures has supported young people across Western Australia for more than 40 years through accommodation, education, emergency relief and practical support. Pipeline exists to give The Nest the capacity to say yes more often.

WHO YOU ARE RIDING FOR

The Nest walks alongside young parents and their babies who are experiencing homelessness or housing instability. The Nest team provides support where young parents are, out in the community or in transitional accommodation in Perth’s northern suburbs. That means practical parenting support, essential baby items, help connecting with health services and playgroups, and someone in their corner while they work towards a stable, long-term home.

Last year, 163 young families who needed The Nest couldn’t be supported. Every dollar raised through the Big Yellow Pipeline Challenge helps change that, with more places, more hours and more support for young families.

YOUR LEGS DO HALF THE WORK

The other half happens before you even reach the start line.

It’s a ride, not a race.
